An Essential Guide to LGBTQ+ Philadelphia
Philadelphia, the nation’s birthplace and one of the most welcoming cities for the LGBTQ+ community, is proud of the historic roles it has played — and plays still — in the founding, advancement and celebration of the LGBTQ+ Civil Rights movement.
In Philadelphia hosted the country’s first major demonstration for gay rights, the Annual Reminders protests outside Independence Hall. That same year, a Rittenhouse Square diner was the site of one of the nation’s first LGBTQ+ sit-in protests. Then in , the first-ever national march for LGBTQ+ Rights was organized at Arch Street Meeting House.
Today, visitors can detect the city’s well-known Gayborhood and investigate important LGBTQ+ landmarks like Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovannis Room (the oldest LGBTQ+ bookstore in the nation) and Tavern on Camac (Philadelphia’s oldest operating LGBTQ+ bar), along with fantastic shopping and dining. The neighborhood also hosts annual events favor the Philadelphia Pride March and Festival and OURfest.

It was around one o’clock in the morning, and I was standing in a long line of mostly straight Penn alumni waiting to enter Voyeur Nightclub. It was a drunk former classmate — at least, I trust he was drunk — who said it: “Isn’t this where the fags go?”
The occasion was the official after-party for my five-year college reunion, which was held at one of the most popular boogie parties in the Gayborhood. The reunion committee’s idea had been innocent enough: Given that most other clubs in Philly shut down at 2 a.m., why not venture where we could let the nice times roll until ?
