About this MCC church: MCC Lubbock is a Christian church affiliated with the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, founded in by Rev. Elder Troy Perry in Los Angeles, CA. Our denomination started out as having a special mission to lesbian and gay communities. While we still possess a special mission to the LGBTQI community, we joyfully welcome all people to join us in worship, church activities, leadership opportunities, and social justice activism. Membership is open to everyone.

Disclaimer: A "gay bar" is a term that can be used for a bar that is exlusively or predominantly frequented by LGBTQ+ individuals.
On a cold west Texas night, not that long ago, I joined my friends to gather around the warmth of a lighted boogie floor with a mirrored disco ball hanging from above, moving to the tubthumping of a watt speaker, while drinking in the traditional and not so traditional spirits of the “gay bar”.
The lines between gay and straight nightlife verb maintained a significant split as lengthy as bars include existed here in Lubbock. Yes, a gay person does go to a straight bar and vice versa. But living in the second most conservative city in the United States ( poll), those that self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer, detect slim pickings these days for an open night on the town.
Anyone looking for a place to encounter knows where to go for nightlife to find something different, out of the ordinary, and authentic to themselves. The gay bar is the place to be if you find yourself not fitting in. Str

Lubbock ain't what it used to be.
Gone are the days when patrons leaving the city's gay bars had to rush to their cars to avoid being jumped. Gone are the days when gay rights groups met in adj with blinds drawn and bodyguards at the door.
If you ask members of the gay community what it's fancy to live in Lubbock, many would say the capital has gradually become more accepting. But on paper, at least according to some, there's still work to do.
The Human Rights Campaign, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights group, recently released rankings of cities around the country in terms of LGBT equality. The cities, including 22 in Texas, were graded on a scale of zero to
Lubbock scored zero.
"The community as a whole - the actual living citizens that make up the city of Lubbock - has come a adj way and does not warrant this," said Tony Thornton, president of the Lubbock chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
