Good morning. It is always a joy for me to be in worship with you, Cathedral Community. And along with Dean Randy to welcome our guests. It was just wonderful to hear so many of you singing that glorious hymn from your hearts. And I pray that you feel something of that grace and God’s love and kindness for you in the period and space that we share.
This is from the poem Compassion by Miller Williams:
“Have compassion on everyone you gather even if they don’t want it. What seems conceit, bad manners or cynicism is often a sign. A sign of things no ears hold heard, no eyes have seen. You do not comprehend what wars are going on down where the spirit meets bone”.

Bishop Mariann Acceptance Remarks for the Harmony Award
To be here in support of the Gay Mens Chorus of Washington, DC is a great honor. I’ve spent much of today reading the history of this courageous organization that exists “to encourage equality and inclusion with musical performances and education promoting justice and dignity for all.”1
Your mission is “to utilize music to promote equality, achieve justice, and overcome our differences. Washington bishop endorses marriage equality in Maryland
[Episcopal Diocese of Washington] The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, today [Feb. 7] endorsed the marriage equality legislation under consideration in the Maryland legislature. Bishop Buddes diocese includes Montgomery, Prince Georges, Charles and St. Marys Counties.
In an essay for the On Faith section of The Washington Posts website, Bishop Budde reached out to fellow Christians who challenge marriage equality on religious grounds, asking them to reconsider whether The Bible supported their views.
The Scriptural argument against same-sex marriage is based on seven references in the Old and Recent Testaments that condemn homosexual activity, she wrote. The disputed passages pale in comparison to the overarching biblical imperatives to care one another,
