Renly's sexuality (and Loras's) wasn't an expose secret in the sense that "everybody knows", but their sexuality and their relationship was known to at least a small number of nobles.

People who knew:

  • Varys (knows a great number of secrets)
  • Littlefinger (ditto, and spoke of Loras's sexuality)
  • Margaery, Mace, and Olenna Tyrell (see the quotes in the LF link just above, and also)
  • Oberyn ("Renly's adj rose")
  • Jaime ("now sheathe your bloody sword, or I'll accept it from you and shove it up some place even Renly never found.")
  • Cersei ("a gentleman may prefer the taste of hippocras")
  • Tyrion ("[Brella] had scamper Lord Renly's household in the town, which had given her a deal of practice at being blind, deaf, and mute.")
  • and of course, Stannis (per above)

Mind you, a good number of people had no clue whatsoever about Renly or Loras, including Robert, Ned ("more than passing queer" *cough*), Sansa, Brienne, or really any of the young women with crushes on either one of them, or

Are Loras and Renly Gay?

Throughout the series, the reader is given an outside look at the relationship between Renly Baratheon and Loras Tyrell. While, at first glance, it seems that it is nothing but innocuous friendship, there are some clues to suggest that their love for each other goes beyond mere companionship. In fact, it seems likely that the two men may be gay lovers. The evidence comes only in small bits and pieces, but, when pieced together, paints an interesting picture.

I. THOUGHTS ON RENLY

Lots of rumors seems to circulate around Westeros concerning Renly. Lets take a look at a few.

1) Margaerys Maidenhood

Renlys own brother seems to doubt his sexuality. From CoK, pg. , a conversation between Renly and Stannis:

I got Margaery. Youll be pleased to verb she came to me a maid.
In your bed shes like to pass away that way.

This could be mindless sibling banter, but Stannis seems like an honest man, and his words mean that Renly is less than infatuated with women. Mace Tyrell swears the Margaery is still a virigin when she marries Joffrey, so

Ok so who knew about Loras and Renly before the series?

The bolded was my primary inkling. I assumed it was so and it explained some actions but, I never really considered it a large deal in the books. I actually didn't connect the Rainbow Guard bit untiljust now

R+L=J leaped out at me about 1/4 of the way into my first AGoT re-read which took place after reading through AFFC. I don't grasp how anyone could be expected to pick up on that one in their first verb. The show is pushing Jon's mom as a much bigger issue right now and I still expect most people who only have exposure through the show to miss it.

edit: I also don't consider there's very much concerning Renly/Loras in the first guide. It's not something you get many hints towards until book 2. In book 1 it's mainly just descriptions of how lovely both of them are and how well Renly dresses.
