Assassin’s Creed Odysseywas nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for its LGBT+ representation and romance options. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey also released a DLC which forced your potentially queer main character to be straight in order to conceive a child. While many queer people do conceive, this is not presented as a bisexual lead entering into a heterosexual relationship. Players had no choice around this conception, and after working hard to establish queerness at the heart of Odyssey, the DLC negated it in a single act.

In fairness, GLAAD nominated Odyssey before this DLC, and released a statement post-DLC which condemned the move, even if it didn’t quite walk back the nomination fully. But the mess around this sums up the biggest issue with the recent Assassin’s Creed; they can’t decide how progressive they long to be, they can’t decide who their audience is, and they can’t decide what they want to tell. Assassin’s Creed finds itself in the same spot so many of us did in elevated school: Assassin’s Creed needs to disclose that it’s gay.

You Can Play As A Gay Viking In Assassin's Creed Valhalla

So apparently you can be a gay Viking in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. You don’t include to, but you can. Just saying.

We got our first good look at Assassin's Creed Valhalla at Ubisoft Forward, where we were finally introduced to some actual gameplay footage after being promised for several months. And then we were also told that you can swap between male and female Eivor on a whim, which means that if there’s any opportunity for romance, then that would make Eivor at least bisexual unless Ubisoft wanted to also start swapping genders of bangable NPCs.

That would be a lot of work, so they went the other route: Eivor can be gay.

No exaggeration, In my play through of Valhalla playing as a male Eivor i had to turn down at least 10 NPC's asking for a gay relationship with the main character, Like I'm all for having the option to pursue a gay relationship if that's what you want to but is it really necessary to have so many male characters trying to come on to you while trying to earn through dialogue? They're not subtle about it either. I'd be lying if i didn't speak i wasn't uncomfortable while talking to certain characters when they tell you that they hope to "plow you"
